A health vertebral body only factures upon strong impact such as car or motorbike accidents. When the bone substance is substantially reduced – as with osteoporosis – the vertebral bodies can also fracture with little or no impact.
When the spine is instable through fractures, a stabilizing operation with titanium implants is always required. Especially, when the fracture endangers surrounding nerves or the spinal cord is already injured: Because in this case, it could lead to irreparable paralysis or paraplegia.
If the fracture is caused by osteoporosis, the vertebral bodies “only” cave in, without the stability being in acute danger. In such situations, often a small procedure of cementing the vertebral body is sufficient.
